History

The Board of Agriculture of the Colorado Agricultural College (CAC) and General Assembly of the Colorado legislature instituted the Facilities Management department through the establishment of a building committee in 1878. As the campus expanded, the responsibilities of the department did as well. President William E. Morgan began emphasizing facilities expansion after assuming office in 1949, and a Plant Development Committee was formed as part of the department in 1954.

Today, along with custodial, utility, trash/recycle disposal, and landscaping, the duties of the Facilities Management Department include projects addressing physical space requirements needed to accommodate particular functions, controlled maintenance projects, and grounds upkeep before and after university events. The department is also involved in planning, design, and construction of facilities at CSU, providing administrative management and professional services for every renovation or new construction project.

Abstract

The Board of Agriculture of the Colorado Agricultural College and General Assembly of the Colorado legislature instituted the Facilities Management department through the establishment of a building committee in 1878. As the campus expanded, the responsibilities of the department did as well. The Records of the Facilities Management Department document the growth of the department and the campus. The collection contains records pertaining to the construction and maintenance of buildings around the Colorado State University (CSU) campus, as well as off-campus academic and research facilities, including Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, and CSU Extension branch stations. Records include building proposals, plans, specifications, design reports, regulatory procedures, news reports, committee meetings, and photographs of building projects and interiors around the CSU campus.

Arrangement

The first series in the collection is organized by building or location, then alphabetically. The second series is arranged by type of record and alphabetically within.

The collection consists of 2 series in 10 record cartons and 1 flat folder:

Series 1: Construction and maintenance documents and specifications, 1916-2015 and undated

Series 2: Digital files, 2015

Acquisition

The Records of the Facilities Management Department was acquired by the University Archive at various times. Betty Duncan transferred records from the CSU Facilities Management Department in 2006, Steve Hultin of the Facilities Management Department in 2013, Per Hogestad of the Facilities Management Department in 2016, and Thomas Hoehn in 2022. In addition, two items were transferred from a deaccessioned collection in 2022.

Processing

Processing was completed in December 2016. Metal fasteners were removed and replaced with plastic clips when necessary. All files were foldered in acid-free folders and housed in acid-free record cartons. Building and location specifications were placed into an oversized flat folder. Materials from a three-ring binder were removed and placed into an acid-free folder.
