History

The College of Veterinary Medicine was founded in 1907. The college underwent several name changes through its history and in 1969 was renamed the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The college is comprised of four undergraduate programs: Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Health, Microbiology, and Neuroscience. There are also four graduate programs: Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Environmental & Radiological Health Sciences, and Microbiology, Immunology & Pathology.

There are several prominent people who have been influential within the college and the larger university, notably Dr. George H. Glover, Dr. I. E. Newsom, Dr. Robert D. Phemister and Dr. Rue Jensen. George Glover was one of the first three graduates of Colorado Agricultural College (now Colorado State University) in 1884. He went on to establish the Department of Veterinary Science and served as its chairman. Glover was also the dean of the Division of Veterinary Medicine and retired in 1934. Following Glover's retirement, I.E. Newsom was appointed the new dean. Newsom served as dean until 1947 when he then served as the interim president of the university from 1948 to 1949. Rue Jensen was dean of the College from 1957 until 1966 and also served as Vice President for Research at CSU (Colorado State University), and Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station. Robert D. Phemister was the dean of the College from 1977 to 1982 and also served as the Interim President of Colorado State University in 1983 for one year. The College also hosts the long running Annual Conference for Veterinarians. The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences remains a prominent component of CSU.
