History

The American Indian ABE (Adult Basic Education) Teacher and Teacher Aid Training Project was a federally grant-funded initiative conducted from Colorado State University. Materials were created on the subjects of health, agriculture, nutrition, consumer education, cultural history, and folklore to be presented as part of basic adult education classes held on reservations. The project focused on Native American populations, primarily the Apsalooke (Pryor Crow/Crow), Nuuchu/Nuu-ciu (Ute), and the Niitstitapi (Blackfoot) tribes, in the Plains and Western states, including Colorado, Montana, Utah, and North and South Dakota. George H. Abrams served as co-director of the project, and Connie Tindel as executive officer.
