Oral History Tapes

 Collection
Identifier: UOHT

Abstract

Dr. James E. Hansen and several assistants created this collection of oral histories primarily to gather information for four books and a paper about Colorado State University (CSU) history: Democracy's College in the Centennial State: a History of Colorado State University (1977), "Charles A. Lory and the Challenges of Colorado's Semi-Arid Frontier" (1980), Chiron's Time: a History of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University (1983), Beyond the Ivory Tower: a History of Colorado State University Cooperative Extension (1991), and Democracy's University: a History of Colorado State University, 1970-2003 (2007). Most interviewees were university administrators, faculty, and staff members or were affiliated with the work of the CSU Cooperative Extension. Contents include cassette tapes, indices, transcripts, notes, biographical information, correspondence, and administrative files.

Restrictions on Access

Several interviewees have restricted access to their interviews and associated documents in Series 1. Further, due to the presence of student information, some files require review before research access is granted. All restrictions are noted in the inventory. Access to student information is open only to the student in question and to Colorado State University employees; however, access to others will be granted upon having written consent from the student or providing written proof that the student is deceased. Additionally, the collection is stored off-site, so advance notice is required.

Restrictions on Use

Not all of the material in the collection is in the public domain. Researchers are responsible for addressing copyright issues.

Processing

As of August 2018, the collection was condensed from 11 boxes to 8 boxes and minimally rearranged so that cassette tapes and folders of associated papers for each oral history were located together within categories. Transcripts from the Sound Model digitization project (2006) for oral histories selected from the Beyond the Ivory Tower: a History of Colorado State University Cooperative Extension project were integrated with corresponding folders in Box 3. Permission releases from interviewees were removed from folders of associated papers and moved to the collection's administrative file. The collection is housed in a mix of acidic boxes and folders. Some cassette tapes are loose in boxes. Boxes were marked for the collection code and number.

In 2020, most (292) cassette tapes were digitized, and the physical tapes were discarded. Previously digitized cassette tapes were not discarded, nor were tapes that could not be digitized due to permissions restrictions. See collection's administrative files for a detailed list of discarded cassette tapes.
