Scope and Contents

The Alvin M. Pettine Collection consists of documents dated 1983 to 2010, with the bulk being from 2010. The materials were gathered by CSU history professor Dr. James E. Hansen in preparation for an oral history with Alvin Pettine's brother Eric, completed in 2010. The collection includes copies of the oral history on CD, and biographical information on Alvin Pettine, his wife Helen, and the extended Pettine family.

Biography

Alvin M. Pettine was a professor of physical education at Colorado State University from 1965 to 1986.

Alvin Pettine was born on January 30, 1927, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, to Elmer and Dolores Pettine. After graduating from high school in 1945, Pettine enlisted and was sent to the Philippines. After the war, he earned a senatorial appointment to West Point, but decided to not re-enlist. After his discharge he attended the University of New Mexico, where he earned his B.S. (1951) and M.S. (1953) degrees. He began teaching in the public schools in Albuquerque in 1951. He married Helen Jenkins on August 3, 1953, and had four sons, Donald, Kenneth, Christopher, and Gregory.

Pettine earned his Ed.D. (1959) from the University of Colorado and was hired to be the athletic director for the Boulder County School District. He became a professor of physical education at Colorado State University in 1965. Pettine was the founder and first president of the Poudre Golden K Kiwanis Club and first president of the Colorado Athletic Directors Association. He retired from CSU in 1986 but continued to volunteer for the CSU track team. Alvin M. Pettine died on December 9, 2005.
