Scope and Contents

The Papers of Albert C. Yates consists of documents dated 1988 to 2003. The materials were either created by Yates or collected by his office during his tenure as Colorado State University president. The collection is primary comprised of printed copies of Dr. Yates' speeches. Some background information related to his commitment to diversity and some of the minutes of his cabinet meetings are also in the collection, but other office papers are not found in the collection.

There is a small series of newspaper articles and copies of press clipping written by and about Yates. This small series helps demonstrate how Dr. Yates was portrayed in the media.

Biography

Dr. Albert C. Yates became the twelfth president of Colorado State University in 1990, a position he held until 2003. Dr. Yates earned his Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemical Physics from Indiana University at Bloomington. Following postdoctoral work at the University of Southern California, he returned to Indiana University to join the faculty of the Department of Chemistry. In 1977, he was named Vice President and University Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Cincinnati. Yates served for nine years as Executive Vice President and Provost at Washington State University in Pullman immediately preceding accepting his position at CSU.

Albert C. Yates was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1942. The third child of John and Sadie Yates, Yates left Tennessee after high school to enlist in the U.S. Navy where he served on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. He returned home to graduate magna cum laude from the University of Memphis with degrees in chemistry and mathematics before pursuing his advanced degrees at Indiana. He and his wife Ann have two children, Aerin and Sadie, and he also has two older children, Steven and Stephanie..

Yates' contributions to the improvement of education has resulted in honors and awards such as the University of Cincinnati Award for Excellence, the Denver Public Schools Celebration of Excellence Award for outstanding contributions to Colorado Education (1994), the Urban League of Metropolitan Denver Recognition Award for encouragement and support of the education aspiration of Denver's minority students (1994), and the Collins Award from the Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce in honor of his exemplary service to the community (1995). The State of Colorado also recognized Dr. Yates in 2001 with an official proclamation by the Colorado General Assembly. Just before he completed his term at CSU in 2003, Yates was awarded the Citizen of the West award by the community leaders and the National Western Stock Show. "The Citizen of the West [award] pays tribute to a person whose life and work embody the Western values we all hold so dear," said Bill Coors. "With Al Yates, his word is his bond, and he's dedicated his time, energy and integrity to building our state's land-grant institution into a leader in the nation and a source of pride for Colorado."

Abstract

Dr. Albert C. Yates served as president of Colorado State University from 1990 to 2003. During his tenure, Dr. Yates spoke to many organizations in the city, state, and country. This collection contains the speeches Yates made to these organizations. In addition, the collection has a limited amount of office papers related to his tenure as university president.

Acquisition

The Papers of Albert C. Yates was transferred by the staff from the president's office in early 2004.

Processing

Processing was completed in 2011. Materials were rehoused using acid-free supplies. Folder titles from original folders were copied to the new folders. All paper clips and rubber bands were removed. Copies beyond two were discarded. Photographs, if existing, were separated from the speeches folders and are now located in the Media series with appropriate cross referencing. All photographs were rehoused in acid-free envelopes. Any available information from the donor regarding the photograph was recorded on the envelope.
