Biographical / Historical

Francis “Frank” X. Gassner began his career in veterinary medicine and chemistry at Colorado A & M College (now Colorado State University) in 1937 following his graduation from the institution. Prior to that he graduated from the University of Munich in Germany in chemistry. Gassner’s teaching and research included a focus on veterinary physiology, hormone chemistry, and endocrine reproductive subjects. His work eventually led to the creation of the Department of Biochemistry. Gassner’s work with the pharmaceutical industry included research leading to the creation of the first contraceptive for women, Enovid as well as goiter conditions.

Frank Gassner was married to Alva Ljungqvist Gassner and had two daughters, Frances and Ingrid. He was born in Germany on January 12, 1896, and died April 21, 1963 in Fort Collins, Colorado. Following his death, Alva Gassner created the Francis X. Gassner Scholarship which is awarded yearly to an undergraduate student who excels in research in biochemistry and molecular biology.

The collection consists of personal and professional correspondence, papers, photographs, a compact disk of photographs, framed items, and medals. Topics include veterinary medicine, chemistry, American Kennel Club certifications, financial issues, and Gassner’s family life. The majority of the collection dates 1935 to 1937 but later documents are present, including a photocopy of Gassner’s obituary.
