Abstract

R. (Royer) Burnell Held was a professor in the Department of Recreation and Watershed Resources from 1967 to 1987. In addition to his role at CSU, Held was active in the community as a member of the Greenbelt Association which encouraged planned preservation of open space, as natural areas and recreation sites in both the city and the county. He was also a member of the National Recreation and Parks Association, the American Planning Association, and the Soil Conservation Society of America.

Royer Burnell Held was born October 30, 1921, in Hinton, Iowa to Albert Herbert and Neva Lucille (Royer) Held. Following service in the Army during World War II, he received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 1947, 1950, and 1953 respectively. Held served on the faculty at Michigan State University and Pennsylvania State University and was a natural resource economist for Resources for the Future in Washington, D.C. He was a division chief for the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation in the Department of the Interior from 1965 to 1967 before joining the faculty at CSU. Held’s publications include Rural Land Uses and Planning : a Comparative Study of the Netherlands and the United States, Soil Conservation in Perspective, and Living in a Changing World : a Memoir, More or Less.

Held married Edith Marie Ladue on April 9, 1949. They have five children: Royer Ladue, Marcia Lee Held Poland, Eunice Lucille Held Ockerman, Karl Eliot, and Karen Ann Held Hales.

The Papers of R. Burnell Held consists of personal and professional correspondence, College of Forestry and Natural Resources memos and newsletters, proceedings from conferences, and working papers on conservation and open spaces. Recreational land reports that include area value and visitation statistics are also included.
