Scope and Contents

The Papers of L.H. Stimmel contains works dating 1954 and 1963. Other materials are undated but most are from Stimmel's tenure as a professor in the English department at Colorado State University (1928-1968). Tests, instructional literature, and other teaching materials comprise the bulk of the collection, but there are also poetry, plays, and instructional materials written by Stimmel.

Biography

Lester Hendren (L.H.) Stimmel (1904-1972) was a professor of English at Colorado A & M, later renamed Colorado State University from 1928 until his retirement in 1968. He specialized in nineteenth century American literature and was known for his high standards for usage and grammar in composition. Stimmel authored essays, short stories, and plays as well as several of his own teaching materials.

Lester Stimmel married Margaret Perry in 1929. She was a professor of bacteriology at Colorado A & M in the 1940s. His daughter Barbara Stimmel Fleming (BA English, 1967, MA Rhetoric, 1970) received her degrees from Colorado State University.

Abstract

Lester Hendren (L.H.) Stimmel (1904-1972) was a professor of English at Colorado A & M, later renamed Colorado State University, from 1928 until his retirement in 1968. He specialized in nineteenth century American literature and was known for his high standards for usage and grammar in composition. Stimmel's papers consist of personal writings, including poetry and plays. Teaching materials are also included in the collection.

Acquisition

The Papers of L.H. Stimmel was donated to the University Archive by Barbara Stimmel Fleming in July 2016 and October 2017.

Processing

The collection was processed in August 2016. Metal paperclips were removed and replaced with archival paper clips. The papers were refoldered in archival folders.
