The first student group on campus of the Colorado Agricultural College (now Colorado State University) was the Philosophian Literary Society, a debate society founded in November 1879 for male students. Later, an equivalent group for women students, the Aesthesian Society, was founded. These groups merged into a co-ed society, the Philo-Aesthesian Society, during the 1886-1887 school year. Other early groups included the Athletic Association, the Columbian Literary Society, the San Juan Boarding Club, and groups dedicated to student government.
