University Digital Photograph Collection

 Collection
Identifier: UDPC

Scope and Contents

The University Digital Photograph Collection consists of nearly 15,000 born digital images of Colorado State University dated 2000 to 2010. Nearly all images were captured by CSU photographers Bill Cotton (retired), John Eisele, and Joe Mendoza. The collection documents many aspects of campus life, including academics, student activities, university administration, research, Cooperative Extension, and the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station. This collection uses the same topical organization and file naming protocol created by CSU photographers. Many series and subseries are purposely empty or undesignated because Creative Services does not currently use the category or did not transfer any files from those categories, but numbering is preserved as a placeholder for future content. For file names, the first two numbers indicate a college, office, or other major subject category; the second two numbers indicate a department or more specific subject category; and the last number indicates the most granular subject category. In this collection, series contain images related to specific campus offices, colleges, or other major subject category. CCS subdivisions for departments and units are not reflected in series or subseries naming for this collection. Instead, all series are arranged into subseries following the CCS's most granular categorization pattern: Subseries 1: Students; Subseries 2: Faculty; Subseries 3: Classes; Subseries 4: Research; Subseries 5: Events; Subseries 6: Internships/Outreach; Subseries 7: Programs/Services; Subseries 8: Facilities; Subseries 9: Awards/Programs; Subseries 10: Miscellaneous. Some content was not designated to a specific category and has been placed in a separate series for miscellaneous content.

History

The University Digital Photograph Collection (UDPC) is the logical extension of the University Historic Photograph Collection, which contains the visual history of Colorado State University from the 1880s to 2000. After 2000, Colorado State University photographers from Instructional Services and University Relations (now combined into Communication and Creative Services) quickly turned to digital photography to capture the institution's history. The collection documents various aspects of 21st century campus life, including academics, athletics, student activities, faculty research, Cooperative Extension, and the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station.

Communication and Creative Services (formerly the Office of Instructional Services) employs several photographers to capture the visual record of CSU. The campus photographers attend events, and in almost every case, they are hired for their services. Their "client" is a particular college or administrative office on campus. CCS takes a large number of images at each event. The images are culled down to the best, and the client further appraises the images. The end result is a collection of photographs held in the CCS Colorado State University Media Library.

Acquisition

University Digital Photograph Collection was transferred from Colorado State University Creative Services in several blocks of content between 2008 and 2010.

Online Materials

Most materials are available through the Colorado State University Libraries website. In the electronic version of this document, direct links appear in context.

Related Collections

University Historic Photograph Collection and Alumni Photograph Collection also contain images related to CSU history.

Processing

Several archivists worked to organize and create metadata for the collection from 2010 to 2012 using the intellectual arrangement originally assigned by Creative Services. The best images of the collection were selected, and then unneeded identical or nearly identical images were deleted. Most images were ingested into Colorado State University's institutional repository, and all were digitally preserved on CSU's servers.

Inventory Note

Note: Empty series and subseries are included to preserve original arrangement and file namingprotocols.
