Scope and Contents

The Papers of Glen D. Schlueter consists of documents dated 1991 to 2010, with the bulk falling from 1997 to 1998. The collection is comprised of materials related to the July 28, 1997, Spring Creek flood. Materials include newspaper articles, damage assessment documents, discharge estimates, newsletters, phone records of emergency calls, reports, four VHS tapes, and a DVD. Also of note is a draft of activities during the flood incident written by Schlueter.

Biography

Glen D. Schlueter is a retired stormwater engineer who worked for the City of Fort Collins Stormwater Utility. He participated in the Stormwater Utility's response to the July 28, 1997, Spring Creek flood event and its aftermath. Schlueter was on the scene where the flood waters overtopped the railroad embankment west of College Avenue, causing a train to fall off the tracks into the mobile home park that was located in what is now Creekside Park.

Born in Loup City, Nebraska, on September 13, 1949, Schlueter grew up in North Platte, Nebraska. He attended a year of junior college in North Platte and the University of Nebraska before joining the U.S. Navy and serving in the Vietnam War. After returning from Vietnam, Schlueter returned to junior college in Nebraska. In 1974, he transferred to Colorado State University, where he earned a B.S. in civil engineering from CSU in 1978. Following graduation, he spent ten years working as a consulting engineer for various companies in Colorado before joining the City of Fort Collins Stormwater Utility. He worked for the City of Fort Collins for 28 years before retiring in 2015.

Abstract

Glen D. Schlueter is a retired stormwater engineer who worked for the City of Fort Collins (Colorado) Stormwater Utility for 28 years. He participated in the Stormwater Utility's response to the July 28, 1997, Spring Creek flood event and its aftermath. The collection contains materials collected by Schlueter related to the flood. Materials include newspaper articles, newsletters, technical documents, reports, phone records of emergency calls, VHS tapes, and a DVD.

Acquisition

Mr. Schlueter donated his papers to the Water Resources Archive in November 2019.

Processing

Processing was completed in March 2021 and included organizing the materials by type. In addition, newspapers articles were organized chronologically. Items were placed in acid-free folders, and the collection was re-boxed. The conference proceedings titled Fort Collins Flood 1997-Assessing the July 28, 1997 Extreme Event that Hit Fort Collins and Colorado State University was removed. In addition, materials unrelated to the 1997 flood and its aftermath were removed.
