The Records of the Word is Out Bookstore consists of documents dated 1988 to 2008, with the bulk falling from 1995 to 2008. History

The Word is Out Bookstore was located in Boulder, Colorado. It was owned and operated by Louise Knapp and her partner, Sally Kornblith, starting in 1994. Word is Out was focused on feminist and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) authors and subject matters. The bookstore closed in 2008.

Abstract

The collection contains various certificate recognitions awarded to the Word is Out Bookstore from agencies representing women's, LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer), and bookstore communities. Documents concerning store operations such as hiring and shelving are also included, as are notes from owner Louise Knapp about the history of the store.

Processing was completed in August 2016. Framed and non-paper items were placed into a flat box while the other materials were placed into a legal-sized Hollinger box.
