Biography

Sidney Heitman, professor of history at Colorado State University, was an internationally recognized scholar of Nikolai Bukharin and a specialist in the emigration of people from the former Soviet Union.

Sidney Heitman was born on April 24, 1924 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. After graduating from high school, Heitman enlisted in the Army Air Force. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Missouri, and his Ph.D. and a certificate of the Russian Institute from Columbia University. He and his wife Frances had two children.

Heitman joined the staff of the history department at Colorado State University in 1955 and served as professor until his death on March 24, 1993. He was the chair of the Russian and East Central European Studies Program and directed the university's Office of International Education. Heitman also directed the university's Germans from Russia in Colorado Study Project during the late 1970s.
