South America, 1963-1996
Scope and Contents
This subseries consists of Nordin's consulting work in South America. Documents from projects on the Rio Orinoco (Venezuela), especially assessing the river's navigability, comprise the majority of this subseries. Files related to research on the Rio Caroni (Venezuela), Canal del Dique (Colombia), and Amazon River Basin (Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela) are also present. Materials include notes, correspondence, reports, reference material, photographs and slides, and maps. Topics include river sedimentation and scour, river navigation and navigability, and sediment measurement. Nordin participated in the first systematic measurement of suspended sediment and bed material for the Amazon River in 1976 and 1977, and during the project he developed a collapsible-bag sampler for measuring suspended sediment load in deep rivers. Only a small number of documents from this study are present in this subseries, though related documents can be found in Subseries 1.7: Sediment studies, Subseries 3: Field books, and Series 6: Visual materials. Files in this subseries are grouped by geographic region but have no further arrangement.
