City of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Department of Public Utilities, an informal history, 1872-1969, 1969

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 3
Identifier: Subseries 1.1

Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Nixon's job as head of Colorado Springs Utilities (1956-1973) involved administering water, sewer, gas, and electric utilities for the city. Nixon actively and successfully pursued transmountain water supply sources during his time with Colorado Springs Utilities. A few documents in the subseries highlight the Homestake Project, a joint reservoir and water delivery venture by Aurora and Colorado Springs completed in 1967. Because Homestake uses Fryingpan-Arkansas Project facilities in part of its system, documents in Subseries 1.2: Southeastern Colorado Water Conservancy District provide additional information on Colorado Springs' water supply. The subseries also contains information on bond funding for the utilities, informational pamphlets on the utilities of Colorado Springs and other municipalities, historical documents, and departmental histories. When Nixon retired, Colorado Springs named their next coal-fueled power plant after him. Several folders in this subseries document the construction (1978-1979) and dedication (1980) of the Ray D. Nixon Power Plant. Predominant material types are reports, histories, pamphlets, newsletters, and memoranda. Materials are arranged alphabetically by category and folder title.
