Scope and Contents

The Colonel Belknap Collection of Memorabilia from the Allied Occupation of Berlin consists of documents dated 1938 to 1973, with the bulk falling from 1945 to 1946. Materials include a scrapbook with newspaper clippings, photographs, letters and other memorabilia from Colonel Belknap's time in Berlin, Germany. The collection also includes some loose photographs, newspapers, brochures, and one book. A few of the items include Adolf Hitler's signature or his book plate and were removed from Hitler's home, the Reichchancellory, by Colonel Belknap.

Biography

Colonel John Harrison Belknap, United States Air Force Reserve (USAFR), was assigned to the Allied Control Authority in Berlin during 1945-1946. He served as the military deputy to Charlie Powel, Civilian Chief for action with respect to the machinery and optics industries of Germany. Along with Great Britain, France, and Russia, the Civilian Chief recommended how much machinery and industrial goods Germany would be permitted to produce, as compared to their pre-war production in 1935.

Acquisition

The Colonel Belknap Collection of Memorabilia from the Allied Occupation of Berlin was donated by Colonel John Harrison Belknap in 1973.

Processing

Processing was completed in February 2016. Materials were rehoused in acid-free boxes and folders.
