United States v. Colorado, 1842-1999

This series consists of materials collected for the case United States v. Colorado, known as the national forest instream flow claims case (W-8439-76). Material types include legal documents, correspondence, publications (mostly photocopies), notes, data, photographs and negatives, slides, floppy disks, and videotapes. During the case, well-known experts in forestry, hydrology, and American history such as Luna Leopold, Roderick Nash, Edwin Mogren, and Daryl Simons testified. The series is divided into four subseries, with Subseries 1.3: Discovery and investigation files being the largest. The Colorado Office of the Attorney General's original files for this case contained additional file sets that were not donated. Researchers should also note that the Discovery Papers were interfiled with the Discovery and Investigation Files before donation. The document "Folder organization" in Subseries 1.1 provides background information on each set of files and may be useful to researchers. Materials in this series are listed numerically; many folders contain multiple file numbers. Some files were omitted during the trial and are noted as such. To determine folders' contents, researchers should refer to the digitized index at the beginning of each subseries, which provides a detailed list of the documents in the subseries and their corresponding file number. Subseries 1.4, Exhibits, does not contain such an index, though some folders in the subseries do contain individual folder indexes.
