Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

This subseries contains materials related to Richardson's long career consulting for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA, in Richardson's notes). Numerous documents are devoted to two courses on river hydraulics and bridge scour that Richardson developed and taught for the FHWA: "Highways in the River Environment, Hydraulic and Environmental Considerations" (HIRE) and "Stream Stability and Scour at Highway Bridges" (SS and S). Research and data collected on bridge scour and from several notable bridge failures in the 1980s and 1990s that Richardson investigated for the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) provide most of the short courses' content. Files were arranged into individual projects by Richardson, though subject matter, data, and published materials overlap significantly between projects. Materials include publications, reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, teaching materials, and notes, as well as materials from the NTSB hearing about the 1987 Schoharie Creek bridge failure. Arrangement is chronological by project start date.
