Identifier: Series 2

Scope and Contents

To facilitate his work, Tipton founded five engineering firms in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1944, he created R. J. Tipton and Associates, which was incorporated in 1946 as a general civil engineering firm and liquidated in 1954. In 1952, he formed R. J. Tipton Associated Engineers, Inc., to provide engineering services in the Western Hemisphere outside of the United States, and he added R. J. Tipton y Asociados de Colombia, Limitada, the same year in Colombia (liquidated 1959). He partnered with Leeds, Hill and Jewett of Los Angeles to create Tipton and Hill, Inc., in 1953, to do engineering work in the Middle East and Pakistan (liquidated 1959). In 1954, he organized Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc., which specialized in irrigation projects, water supply projects, and hydroelectric development. In 1960, R. J. Tipton Associated Engineers, Inc., and Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc., merged under the name Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc.

Reports from four firms--R. J. Tipton and Associates, R. J. Tipton Associated Engineers, Inc., R. J. Tipton y Asociados de Colombia, Limitada, and Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc.--comprise this series. Projects for the City and County of Denver, Colombia, Ecuador, and Pakistan comprise the bulk of the materials, but the series also contains reports from projects in other Colorado cities as well as Cuba, Peru, and Turkey. A booklet listing Tipton and Kalmbach project reports at the beginning of the series reveals the breadth of the firm's work in the United States. The listed project dates (1913-1972) indicate that Tipton completed many of these reports before Tipton and Kalmbach's incorporation, and other associates completed projects after Tipton's death in 1967. Reports cover subjects such as water infrastructure development, irrigation, soil quality and salinization, and hydropower. Materials are grouped by country and project. Geographical categories are listed with the U.S. first and the rest following alphabetically; reports within these categories are listed chronologically.
