Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series consists of documents, maps, digital files, and photographs arranged in alphabetical order. The local history of Fort Collins is the focus of a paper detailing the early history of schools in Fort Collins, and of correspondence between local historian Evadene Swanson and Professor James Hansen regarding the Blount house. A manuscript on the anti-conservation movement in Colorado by McCarthy (no first name listed) is included in the collection. The history of agriculture in Colorado is the subject of one notebook written by an unidentified researcher and of notes by A.T. Steinel for his book "The History of Agriculture in Colorado." Student papers and reports on Montezuma Fuller, prohibition, and short story authors in Colorado are included as well as research reports for a home economics course. An oral history interview with Peggy Malchow provides insight into sugar beet farming near Berthoud, Colorado. Of interest is a contract between Mr. W.D.W. Taft and the Quartermaster of Camp Collins for supplying cordwood to the Army in 1864. Also of interest is Professor Ruth J. Wattles' proposal for a study of the history of irrigation and reclamation in Colorado, which includes a letter from Tom L. Mead, the son of Elwood Mead, recounting his father's history. An unsigned letter detailing the person's life in southern Colorado is included. Letters not related to Colorado are political and include an 1834 letter written by George Howard, governor of Maryland from 1831 to 1833, regarding an engraving of his father. Also included are a letter written by David S. Kaufman during his term as a congressional representative from Texas in 1848 requesting a subscription to the Congressional Globe for a citizen, and an 1884 letter by Representative Samuel F. Barr of Pennsylvania to President Chester A. Arthur endorsing a candidate whose name is illegible for Solicitor of the Treasury. A historical trail map from Little Thompson Station to Virginia Dale, Colorado, and a small handwritten map of the village of Betie, Colorado also exist in the collection, as do photographs of vehicles and ghost towns.
