Stahmann Farms/State of New Mexico, 1954-1987 and undated
Scope and Contents
In the early 1980s, Wright Water worked for defendants Stahmann Farms and the State of New Mexico in relation to El Paso (Texas) v. Reynolds, No. 80-730 HB (often referred to in these files as El Paso v. New Mexico; Reynolds was the state engineer). Stahmann Farms operated the world's largest irrigated pecan orchard in southern New Mexico. At issue were potential depletions of the Rio Grande system, including the Hueco-Mesilla Bolson Aquifer, by El Paso's proposed groundwater pumping as well as the question of the constitutionality of New Mexico's prohibition on exporting groundwater. Wright Water conducted model studies and hydrologic studies (quantity and quality) for their clients. In the end, a settlement agreement was signed in 1991, ending the eleven year case. Materials here appear to be the compiled files of several WWE employees working on the case; thus, duplication may exist between various sets. Documents include correspondence, reports, data, maps, reference materials, depositions, court documents, and photographs. Arrangement largely remains as found.
